June 7: Mixer with NAAAP, APABA-PA

What: Get ready to mix and mingle with some of the top Asian American Professionals in the fields of Journalism, Business, Law, etc.  Get to know your friends from AAJA, NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals) and APABA-PA (Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania).  Enjoy complimentary appetizers, bring cash for some great drink specials, and dare to bring your singing voice.  A karaoke room will be available.

Environmental seminar for journalists: DL extended

What: The Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting is offering a seminar for journalists, Coastal Impacts: a Marine Science Seminar for Journalists, July 13-15, 2011, at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

The three-day science seminar will provide an introduction to environmental issues affecting coastal communities, including marine pollution, water quality, and links between oceans and human health. The Metcalf program will feature leading marine and environmental scientists and journalists, coastal field trips, and visits to marine research labs.

How to apply: Journalists who report for ethnic news outlets, including
freelancers, and minority journalists are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a minimum of two years’ experience and a demonstrated interest in covering environmental topics.

The tuition-free seminar includes lodging, meals, and travel support up to $200.

Saturday, May 21: Mixer with NY chapter

What: This year’s AAJA National Convention is in Detroit on Aug. 10-13. The AAJA-Philly chapter is going on a mini-road trip and partnering with AAJA-New York for a pre-convention mixer in New York City on Saturday, May 21. (Earlier in the day, there will be a digital-training event at CNN in NY.)

Come network and learn more trivia about the Motor City. The mixer will also feature a raffle for a convention registration and other Detroit-themed
prizes.

Where: Motor City Bar, 127 Ludlow Street, by Rivington Street in the
Lower East Side of Manhattan

When: 5:30-8:30 p.m.

What else: Free Admission, Cash Bar

A fun-filled day to network with NY journalists and to brush up on some basic technical skills such as shooting digital video.

(This is planned as a whole-day event, not one with different sessions where you can drop in and out.)
